Before You Decide to Adopt
The Humane Society wants to find homes for all the pets we receive; however, it is our goal to find permanent and loving homes for them.
We want to be sure that everyone who considers adopting a pet fully understands the following commitments they are making for the lifetime of that pet:
Dogs and Cats can live for 10 to 15 years (or longer)… Are you ready to make such a commitment?
Are you ready for the challenge of housetraining a puppy or dog?
If you have to move, what will you do with the pet you adopt?
All Dogs and Cats Require The Following
Annual visits to the Veterinarian for checkups and vaccinations
Daily exercise and playtime
Training-putting time into this will help to eliminate future behavior problems
Good quality food and fresh water daily
Lots of love and patience
Our Adoption Policies
- We have a minimum waiting period of 24 hours for any adoption.
- All pets 12 weeks of age and older MUST be spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter.
- All pets that are adopted under 3 months of age MUST be spayed or neutered by the age

- We require a veterinary reference for everyone who fills out an adoption application. All current and past pets must have up-to-date vaccinations.
- We require a verbal and written statement from your landlord if you rent or lease your property.

Please call us within 2 days to find out the status of your adoption application.
If your adoption has been approved and confirmed, PLEASE CALL US AT 607-746-3080 BEFORE LEAVING HOME to make an appointment to pick up your new pet !!!!
Upon adoption approval and leaving the shelter to go home:
- All cats must leave the shelter in a cat carrier provided by the new owner.
- All dogs must have a collar (not a choke chain) and leash provided by the new owner. For your convenience, we sell a variety of collars and leashes at the shelter. The sales from these items help us to take care of our animals. Thanks! Our shelter staff will assist you in attaching rabies, license, and identification tags to the collar you bring in.
Microchipping
When you adopt a pet from Heart of the Catskills, you can also outfit your cat and dog with a microchip linked to your ownership information.
Microchipping is safe and harmless to your pet. In the event your pet gets lost, most animal shelters across the country can scan your pet for a microchip.
Once scanned, that information leads your pet back to you.
New pet guardians have the option to have us perform the service for $20 at the time of adoption plus a one time registration fee of $6.25 to the Home Again Pet Recovery service.
Shelter alumni are also invited to partake in this new technology. Want a little time to think about it or do a little research? Check out www.HomeAgainID.com.
The American Animal Hospital Association reports that more than 60,000 pets are lost or stolen every year in the U.S.; 90% of those no identification are never returned
to their original homes. However, with proper identification, pets are reunited with their owners 90% of the time.
HCHS helps you complete and even sends in your Home Again information sheet – this way we know it gets done! Simply place the yellow numbered ID tag on your pet’s collar
(along with current rabies and address tags)and your pet is good to go. All these identifiers make it easier for animal shelters and people who find your pet, find you!
We Reserve the Right to Deny any Adoption
